COST Action FA1103

Endophytes in biotechnology and agriculture

Endophytes are microorganisms that live within plant tissues and do not cause negative effects to the plants. They have great importance in plant health, prodctivity, resistance to pathogens and acclimatisation to extreme environments.

The main aims of the Action are to identify bottlenecks limiting the use of endophytes in biotechnology and agriculture and to provide solutions for economically and ecologically compatible exploitation of endophytes, to obtain further knowledge on ecology of endophytes in plant-soil ecosystems and in plant-plant and plant-animal interactions, development of new microbial inocula for increase of biomass together with improved plant quality, protection against biotic and abiotic stress, and phytoremediation..

Strigolactones: biological roles and applications

Strigolactones (SLs) are a newly discovered class of phytohormones that play a role in establishig plant morphology in response to environmental cues. Their significance has been also documented in the dialogue between plants and other rhizosphere residing organisms. They are important in plant biology and agronomy, having great potential in modern agriculture. The main objective of the COST Action is sheding new light on our understanding of  the biosynthesis and signaling of strigolactones resulting in adjustments in the plant architecture and in establishing beneficial rhizosphere interactions. The COST Action allows to create a multidisciplinary network of experts, of both basic and applied sciences, who can share expertise through the flexibility of the COST framework
